10 Useful Playlists

One of my goals was to create 10 useful iTunes playlists for my iPod. I tend to just put it on shuffle and then skip through all the songs I don't want to hear. I thought playlists would make it a little easier for me to listen to whatever I'm in the mood for at that time. So I spent 2+ hours creating lists and transferring songs into them.

Creating these lists proved to be a little more difficult than I'd imagined. Well, I should rephrase that. Coming up with the name was easy, deciding which song should go into the playlist was difficult. iTunes assigns genres to artists, but it seems to happen with no rhyme or reason. For instance, Pearl Jam's Ten is considered Rock, while Pearl Jam's self-titled album is considered Alternative. Why? It's all Pearl Jam. And what's the difference between Alternative, New Wave and 80s music? So confusing.

Then I created a playlist titled My Favorites, which I'd planned to fill with songs I'm currently digging. I thought about calling it Current Music, but not everything on the list is current. Then I started putting songs in it that I'm not really currently digging, but they're still favorites nonetheless, and I wondered if that defeated the purpose of the playlist. Clearly I put way too much thought into this process.

I finally came up with a list and managed to create 13 playlists instead of the goal of 10. I also reserve the right to change/delete these lists, as long as I keep 10 at all times. I already had a couple playlists, so I didn't include those since they weren't new and therefore not part of this goal.
  • 80s Music
  • Alternative
  • Angry Music
  • Classic Rock
  • Country
  • Disco/Funk
  • Hair Bands
  • Happy Music
  • Hip Hop/Rap
  • My Favorites
  • New Wave
  • Rock
  • Soundtracks
Now I just have to remember to move any new music added into the appropriate playlist. I probably should've made that a goal as well.
