Tour the State Capitol

Okay, so my project doesn't officially start until tomorrow, but the opportunity arose for me to complete one of my goals and I took it. Yesterday we took Ella to the state museum for their 20th anniversary celebration and on the way home we decided to stop by the statehouse. Low and behold, it was open! So we did a self-guided tour. I've lived in Columbia for 27 years and I've only been inside this building once - for Strom Thurmond's viewing after his death.

Our first task was to tour the grounds. There are a number of monuments all around the building, as well as many beautiful trees, flowers and plants. And there also seems to be a squirrel army protecting our statehouse, as they were everywhere! Ella loved chasing them around and I was just waiting for one to attack, but thankfully it never happened.

Upon entering the building you must go through security and a metal detector. The guard asked if we were carrying any weapons and I told him I left my bazooka at home that day and he actually chuckled. I'm surprised he hasn't heard that one a million times. The first floor is just a lot of marble and columns. Ella had the best time ever chasing a little boy back and forth from one end of the room to the other. So much so that she tried to follow them home. She's lucky it was a good day or I may have let her go with them.

The second floor contains the SC Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as a very large lobby with chairs, phones, etc. I imagine it full of lobbyists during session trying to call in various people to check on this or that. There is a nice statue of John C. Calhoun smack dab in the middle of the room. The senate room is located on the left, the representatives on the right.
The third floor is just a long hallway of sorts going around the entire perimeter of the building. Most doors were locked and I got really nervous watching Ella poke her head through the railing. I just imagined her plummeting three stories down. Yes, I'm that dramatic.

My favorite was the view of the inside of the dome from the 2nd floor.
And that concludes our tour for this evening. Thank you for your time. Please come again.

Wonderful, Karen! It's been since I was 10 since I was last in the State House and I work right there! You got some great pictures!

Congrats on completing a goal! I've never toured our state capitol either. Maybe I should do that one of these days...
