Our 44th President

Yesterday I stood in line for 3 hours to vote for our 44th President. This country has been in turmoil for years now and has been in utter distress the past several months thanks to a failing economy. I know a lot of my fellow Americans (including myself) have been looking for a bright spot to turn to, something to believe in, to inspire us, to give us hope. I didn't mind waiting for 3 hours because I knew I was voting for someone who was going to change the way we see things; someone who would not only impact our country, but the world around us. I am confident in my choice of Barack Obama. I am confident he will heal our country and bring us the change we all long for.

Last night I watched the news as they made the announcement that Barack Obama was our new President Elect. I was overcome with emotion. I live in a red state and am surrounded by racism every day. In this white world, it's not uncommon for people to think you're one of them and spout of their hate and anger freely, just assuming you think the same way they do. I'm surrounded by Good Ol' Boys and old Southerners who still live by the thinking that it's okay to bash another race. I'm ashamed that a few of my family members even subscribe to this way of thinking. I never thought I'd see the day when a black person was elected to the highest position in our government. I hoped my own children could see it one day, but I didn't expect it. Watching Obama stand up there as the crowd cheered for him was such a momentous occasion. I watched history in the making. I saw the walls of racism crumble down before us. I'm not naive, I know it still exists, but to see the first black person elected President just made me so very proud to be an American.

I got really choked up when I saw Brian Williams hold up a poster of the previous 43 Presidents. He made a comment about how all those men shared one thing in common - they're all white. That common thread no longer exists. A black man has been elected President of the United States. It's long overdue. Change is coming and I for one welcome it with open arms.

Congratulations, President Obama. Yes we can.
